University of Malawi Students’ Union (UMSU) is expected to meet this evening (Wednesday) to decide their next course of action following reports that the Bunda College of Agriculture is officially joining the sit in on Thursday.

This also follows reports that the Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN) and College of Medicine lecturers have intensified preparations to join the fray by Monday next week.

This, according to Chitsanzo Chatheka, UMSU President, has forced them to call an impromptu meeting to map the way forward.

“At the receiving end of this entire debacle, is our future. We are therefore meeting this evening to stitch together something that can put this thing to an end,” said Chatheka.

In their closed door meeting on Tuesday, Lecturers at Bunda gave Inspector General of Police Peter Mukhito until 17 :00 hours Wednesday to apologise failure of which will automatically usher them into the sit-in zone which already has Chancellor College and Polytechnic lecturers.

The lectures have been boycotting classes for about one month. They have been protesting the summoning by Police Inspector General Peter Mukhito of their colleague, Associate Professor Blessings Chinsinga.

Chinsinga was summoned following an example of the uprising in Egypt and Tunisia he gave during his Public Policy class on the cause of mass protests.

The lecturers are demanding academic freedom and want Mukhito to apologise for the incident. The IG has refused to do so, arguing that there is need to balance between academic freedom and national security.
