A Kasungu police officer who on 23 March raped an inmate has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) by the First Grade Magistrate’s Court in the district.

On Wednesday, the court heard that on March 23 this year, Constable Godfrey Msulira (35) of Luwenga Village, T/A Khombedza in Salima raped a 21-year-old inmate he had escorted to the toilets where she wanted to pass urine.

“The officer escorted the victim to the toilets where he raped her after threatening the inmate with unspecified action if she shouted,”police prosecutor Superintendent Christopher Katani told the court.

The court heard that the inmate reported the matter to other police officers who were also on duty on the day and Msulira was arrested.

In his ruling, magistrate Heinz Kantchere said that suspects, like all citizens, have all the right to be protected and that police officers, as law enforcers, have a duty to protect rights of the suspects>
