MAN CUTS WIFE’S THROAT, SETS BODY AND SON ON FIRE

In what could be described as one of the worst forms of gender based violence, an envious Malawian husband has brutally killed his wife by cutting her throat before setting her body on fire.

Police say the incident happened at Bolero in Rumphi District after the suspected offender, Masozi Gondwe, 31, quarreled with his wife for suspecting that she hadan extra marital affair.

After failing to hold his fury, Gondwe reportedly picked a sharp knife which he used to chop his wife’s throat.

The departed wife was identified as Esinala Winga, 29.

As if that was not enough, Gondwe is reported to have closed the house main door before setting it on fire. Inside, there was also a three-year-old boy (his step son) who was asleep.

“The two were burnt to death together with every property in the house.

After the incident, the man run away but was arrested Tuesday after noon,” Detective Sergeant Moyo of Bolero Police said.

According to Moyo, the two have been married for two years.

Gondwe is currently at Rumphi Police custody and has been charged with murder.

The suspect hails from Kasumbe Village, Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in the district while the late wife came from Kayuni Village, TA Kyungu in Karonga district.

In another development, police in Salima have arrested Arthur Chigulu for allegedly killing his one month old baby on April 22, 2011.

Salima Police spokesperson Gift Chitowe said the suspect quarreled with his wife over K400 he allegedly stole from her and amid the wrangle he pushed a wall which fell on the baby. The baby was rushed to hospital where it was pronounced dead.

Chigulu hails from Siyasiya, TA Khombedza in the district.—( Nyasa Times)
