Police in Machinga have arrested Group Village Headman Chatumba for allegedly exhuming bodies and extracting bones for sale in Mozambique.

Machinga Police Public Relations Officer Joseph Sauka confirmed of arresting the chief whose real name is Anusa Kafumba.

According to Sauka, six months ago police received report from the community that seven grave sites have been tampered with.

“When we rushed to the site, we only found empty coffins with all the seven carcasses missing.

“Apart from that incident, recently two families also reported to the police that their relatives’ grave sites have been tampered with, where investigation led us to group village headman chatumba.”

“After a prolonged interrogation, he and his accomplice revealed that they have been extracting bones from the exhumed bodies for sale in Mozambique ,” said Sauka .

Sauka said the two will appear in court soon to answer charges of exhuming bodies and trespassing which is contrary to section 129 of the Penal Code. Mw Voice
