800 POLICE OFFICERS UNDERGOING SPECIAL TRAINING TO COUNTER 20Th JU LY DEMONSTRATION, AS MDF WAITS IN WINGS


About 800 police officers are
currently said to be
undergoing special training
at Limbe Police Training
College in Blantyre and
Ntaka-taka in Dedza in readiness for the civil
society’s demonstrations.

One of the trainers at Limbe
Police College, speaking on
strict conditions of
anonymity, told Malawi
Voice that the training has
been going on throughout the week and is expected to
end this weekend.

“This training has been
initiated by powers beyond
our IG (Peter Mukhito)
himself. The aim is to just
counter the impending
demonstration with zero casualties,” said the source.

When reached for his
comment, Police Inspector
General Peter Mukhito
expressed ignorance of the
development but was quick
to say special trainings for police officers is an on going
exercise.

Meanwhile, with another
demonstrations being
planned by the sympathizers
of President Bingu wa
Mutharika, the Malawi
Defence Force (MDF) has said it is waiting in the wings
should the police fail to
contain the possible eruption
of violence.

Calling itself Concerned
Citizens being headed by a
Davie Kanyoza, the group
has vowed to take the civil
society head on should they
proceed to march against Mutharika.

“We are always ready and
we will be ready on
Wednesday to counter any
possible eruption of civil
strife. We are only urging
parents to make sure that kids should remain in door
on the day,” said MDF
