BLANTYRE,— Police say one person has been killed and several others injured during nationwide demonstrations in Malawi.

Malawians say they are protesting against persistent fuel and foreign exchange reserve shortages, and bad governance.

Demonstrations on Wednesday July 20 in the commercial center of Blantyre,
in the capital and other major towns turned violent as protesters also looted several shops belonging to ruling party officials and allies of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at demonstrators.

A north regional police spokeswoman, Norah Chimwala, said she could not confirm how the person died.

She said several others, including police officers, had been injured.

Opposition politicians and journalists said they have also been assaulted by police. @ Democrat
