Malawi President threatens ‘war’

Mutharika: Ready to go to war

Malawi President Bingu wa
Mutharika says the country is ready to go to war should civil society organisations continue to reject his Presidential Contact and Dialogue Committee.

Irate Mutharika said he is tired of the demands by the civil society organisations to continue rejecting the composition of the committee and plan for another round of protests on September 21.

“I have instituted a
Presidential Contact and
Dialogue Committee and now you say you do not want it. The committee is chaired by one of the most renowned retired Archbishop Bernard
Malango who is also a Doctor. Now what do you want? If you continue to reject, I can go to war,” said Mutharika.

“I will deal with you,” he
threatened.

He was speaking when
opening an Agricultural Trade Fair in Blantyre on Thursday.

Mutharika threatened to deal with his critics, saying
patience was now running
out.

Civil society organisations
who have planned mass
protests in September have described the President’s committee as lacking technocrats.

The committee for the CSOs and the president’s were formed to provide solutions to the 20-petition letter by the CSOs. They are pressuring Mutharika to change his autocratic system of governing the country which has resulted in many national problems.

Civil society groups have
threatened more protests if President Mutharika does not declare his wealth, solve dollar and fuel shortages that have
hit the economy and restore diplomatic relations with former colonial ruler and major aid donor Britain.

They also want to stop the
First Lady’s salary for charity work. @ Malawi Voice
