Court stops Chanco closure

STUDENTS: Battle for academic freedom

High Court in Blantyre on Saturday granted an injunction to students of Chancellor College, the main constituent college of the University of Malawi against the indefinite closure by the University Council.

The students sought a court injunction after University Council, the university regulatory authority, announced on Saturday that they decided to close the college because millions of kwacha were being spent in feeding students who are just doing nothing.
But Justice Joseph Manyungwa granted the students the injunction stopping the council from closing the institution and forcing students out of the campus.

“We have obtained a court injunction against the closure,” said Chancellor College Students Union president Patrick Phiri.

The students have not been learning since the opening on July 4. They back their lecturers quest for academic freedom and last week started a vigil outside the University Office to force authorities to resolve the stand-off. @Malawi Democrat
